 Verified Exceptional tour with Andean Raju and Javier
We booked our 8 day Huayhuash circuit a year in advance. Straight from the beginning Pablo was very responsive with information about our tour. The 3 of us were a little bit nervous when arriving in Huaraz as our anticipation was very high for very long. We have met for a pretour briefing a day before where we have met Javier, our guide for the next 8 days as well as the rest of our group. Over the next week we have created friendships and shared indelible memories that will last us a lifetime. Javi is a remarkable guide as well as a humble and friendly person who made us feel safe and welcome from start to finish. The rest of the team (cooks, donkey drivers, assistant guide) went above and beyond for us with impeccable service. Their work is truly tireless and deserve all our respect.  Verified Huayhuash Trek 8 Days
We had a special experience doing the Huayhuash Trek 8 days with Andean Raju Expeditions. We booked this trek one year in advance and Pablo was super helpful from the beginning. The trek is not easy at all, but we had all the help to succeed. JAVIER was the most prepared and helpful guide I have ever hiked with. If you have him on your hike, you are extremely lucky. He was always there if we needed something. I want to thank all the team members that were with us (Javier our guide, the guide's assisstant, the chef, the chef's assisstant, and the 4 donkey drivers). They all worked so much for us to have a great experience. An advice to anyone who is planning to make this hike, bring cash, because you will be impressed by the amount of work everyone does, and you will regret not having cash to tip the team properly. Each morning started at 5:30 with tea brought to your tent. Then until 6:00 all the bags for the donkeys were supposed to be ready. Then we had breakfast and started the hike. You go at your own healthy pace, but you should be fit for this type of altitude hiking. I like that we had a very helpful horse that would carry a person if they were not feeling well. There is also an army of donkeys carrying all the supplies and also being so cute! What was difficult for me was the last day and that one the way down we didn't take even a break. For about 1000m of elevation loss and a little ovef 2 hours. As an advice, 2 breaks of 5 min each would be really helpful for the legs :) As we leave, we keep the good memories, the friendships we made and the respect and total apreciation for all the hardwork we saw from our team.  Verified Trekking ou mountaineering région de Huaraz - experience au Vallunaraju
Expérience ultra positive avec Andean Raju! Un immense merci d’ailleurs à Pablo et à toute l'équipe. Si vous cherchez une agence de confiance, ultra-réactive et humaine à Huaraz, je les recommande à 200 %! Dès le départ, la communication en amont avec l'agence a été rapide, claire, efficace et transparente (et en anglais, mon espagnol étant assez rudimentaire). Pablo a été de bon conseil dans notre planification et préparation. Notre ascension du Vallunaraju a été parfaite du début à la fin, malgré une logistique compliquée de notre côté et quelques enjeux de santé pour mon fils. J'avais d'avance fait une erreur de date lors de la réservation (les bonnes dates, mais pour août au lieu de juillet), puis mon fils est tombé malade juste avant le départ (tourista). À deux reprises et à quelques jours d'avis seulement, Pablo a tout réorganisé avec une gentillesse et une flexibilité rares, sans aucune obligation, et malgré une période vraiment occupée pour lui. N'ayant pas trouvé de guide disponible à la dernière minute, il s'est en plus proposé pour nous guider lui-même. Sur le glacier, Pablo a été un guide exceptionnel : attentif et très professionnel, en plus d’être super sympathique. Tout au long, je nous sentais pleinement en sécurité grâce à son savoir faire, surtout pour cette première expérience pour mon fils de 13 ans. Le reste de l'équipe a été tout aussi formidable. La nourriture durant l’expé était super bonne, avec de bons lunchs. Bref, que du positif sur toute la ligne ! Très contente aussi du choix de faire le Vallunaraju également, comme on voulait une option sur 2 jours qui incluait une nuit en tente, mais qui demeurait facile d’accès (non technique). Le Nevado Mateo était la première option qu’on regardait et je crois que de le prévoir avant le Vallunaraju aurait aussi été bien, pour l’acclimatation et la préparation au Vallu, qui est somme toute un peu plus exigeant selon moi. Petit partage : ne pas négliger le temps requis pour s’acclimater avant une ascension ou un trek qui parcours les hautes altitudes. Prévoir assez de jours et si possible un peu de lousse pour les imprévus (transport ou santé). Et faire vraiment attention côté nourriture et eau quand on a une expé comme ça de prévu, car tomber malade juste avant ou pendant c’est loin d’être idéal.

An absolutely fabulous trip in the Huayhuash on the 10 day circuit. The crew all worked well together - such a great team of hard working pleasant people. They always helped each other out to ensure everything was completed. So much work goes into daily moving camp, cooking, and cleaning all the dishes. Our every need was met and beyond. Their exceptional work ethic did not go unnoticed A shoutout to our cook Juan for the delicious breakfast, dinners and packed lunches. How he was able to cook restaurant quality meals is beyond me. This was a strenuous hike and we appreciated the amount of protein, fruits and vegetables and carbs and snacks provided. Beyond that, we adore Juan always having a smile on his face and communicating with us despite our poor Spanish (for which I apologize). Adam our donkey driver was kind to his donkeys at all times. It was obvious they are well cared for on and off the trail. We love donkeys and have so much gratitude for his gentle way. Adam is also such a hard worker and we appreciate all he did to make this trip work seamlessly. Our guide Marco was always pleasant, had a good attitude and ensured we had the best time...and we did. Thank you to Pablo for setting up this trip of a lifetime. From the time we were picked up at our hotel to the time we were redelivered everything was perfect - including the authentic lunch provided at the restaurant in the village at the end of the trip. We had intended to climb Diablo Mundo on day 8 - however we were pretty tired by that point and opted to bypass this peak. If I had to do it again, we would have chose to stay in Huaraz an extra 2 days and climbed a local and less remote peak. I wish I'd have researched more to know this was an option.

J'ai eu la chance de faire cette aventure avec 2 amis vers la fin juin 2026. Toute la communication avant le jour J a été excellente. Pablo répond par WhatsApp assez rapidement, ce qui nous a permis de poser nos questions et de convenir d'un moment pour essayer les bottes (fournies dans le prix de l'activité) très facilement. Le jour de l'activité, Pablo et son collègue sont venus nous chercher à notre hôtel autour de 2h45 AM. Ils étaient à l'heure, tout était parfait de ce côté. La voiture était confortable, ce qui a rendu la route assez agréable. Le fait que tout le matériel technique soit fourni est un énorme avantage. De plus, Pablo et son collègue sont sympathiques et nous avons passé un bon moment avec eux. Le conseil que j'aurais à donner est de ne pas sous-estimer cette activité. Les 500 mètres de dénivelé positif peuvent sembler un peu faciles à première vue, mais l'altitude rend la respiration plus difficile et le mal de tête peut arriver rapidement. Je suggère fortement de rester quelques jours à Huaraz pour s'acclimater avant de vivre cette expérience. De notre côté, nous avons passé 8 jours complets à Huaraz et fait 4 randonnées d'acclimatation allant de 3500 à 4600 mètres avant de nous lancer dans l'ascension du Mateo. Cette expérience a définitivement été l'un des moments les plus mémorables de mon voyage. J'ai tellement aimé que je prévois revenir en Amérique du Sud pour faire un 6000 mètres dans les prochaines années. Si je reviens gravir des montagnes proches de Huaraz, je vais certainement encore faire appel aux services de Pablo.

We had the best time ever!!!! Our guides Marco and Pascal and our chef Juan were so much fun to hang out with. The views were breathtaking, the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Our campsites were all great and had toilets with running water!! The gear that was provided was high quality and kept us warm through the cold nights and weather. My experience with Pablo and his team was top-notch! Pablo was so helpful and communicative, our guides were great, and our chef/food was exceptional. The Huayhuash is jaw-dropping gorgeous, but also difficult at times with terrain and altitude. I had a perfect experience from beginning to end. Everything was very well planned, clear, punctual, and professional. I rented gear for the trip and everything was in excellent condition. The food was very good, the service was great, and the whole experience felt safe and very well organized. What I appreciated most was how much effort they made to understand my level, my preferences, and what I wanted from the trip. I was traveling solo, and it made a big difference to be with someone professional, experienced, and thoughtful, who really took the time to adapt the experience to my situation. I have done similar mountaineering and hiking expeditions in other countries, and this was honestly as good as it gets. Huayhuash is the second highest tropical mountain range in the world after the Cordillera Blanca. The Huayhuash Trek crosses the whole Huayhuash mountain range. This trek is considered to be one of the most beautiful treks on the planet.

The distance from north to south of the Cordillera Huayhuash is 30 km, in which there are 7 mountains that exceed 6,000 meters of altitude and 7 mountains over 5,500 meters, among the highest peaks we have the Yerupajá (6,617 m, the second highest mountain in Peru) and Siula Grande (6,344 m) which reached world fame for being the scene of one of the most epic survival stories of mountaineering and which was later captured in the book and film “Touching the void” by mountaineer Joe Simpson.

In addition, Cordillera Huayhuash, is home to dozens of glacial lakes of incomparable beauty among which stand out: Carhuacocha, Jahuacocha, Solterococha, Mitucocha, Juraucocha, as well as a great diversity of flora and wildlife native and unique to the Andes.

Undoubtedly, Huayhuash trekking has all the natural scenarios that award it as the most beautiful alpine trekking in the world for its beauty and the wild air of its mountains. Moreover, Huayhuash is the scene of great feats of world climbing and even of the history of Peru. Currently, mountaineers from all around the world make the trek to enjoy the wonderful scenery while acclimatizing and gaining physical endurance, as a previous process to climb peaks of considerable altitude and complexity in the Cordillera Blanca.

Itinerary

Day 1Huaraz (3,100 m) – Cuartelhuain (4,100 m) – Mitucocha Camp (4,270 m)

We pick you up at your hotel in Huaraz at 4:00 am and drive south to Conococha, then east to the town of Chiquián, where we stop for about 30 minutes for breakfast. The road continues past the villages of Llamac and Pocpa to Cuartelhuain, where the trek begins.

A steady zigzag climb takes us to Cacananpunta Pass (4,690 m), the first pass of the circuit, with wide views east toward the Huánuco region and the Huallanca range. Our chef serves lunch just below the pass. In the afternoon we pass Pucacocha, a lake tinted red by iron, and pay the first community fee at the Quebrada Wayra checkpoint. A short walk brings us to Mitucocha Camp, at the foot of Jirishanca, Ninashanca and Rondoy.

Day 2Mitucocha Camp (4,270 m) – Alcay Pass (4,780 m) – Carhuacocha Camp (4,140 m)

We start on easy, gently rising ground to Yanapunta (4,640 m), then take a side trail up to Alcay Pass. It is one of the finest viewpoints of the circuit, facing the wild east faces of Siula Grande, Yerupajá Grande and Chico, Jirishanca and Ninashanca.

We stop for lunch near Alcaycocha Lake, then descend the Yanayana valley to Carhuacocha, one of the most beautiful lakes of the Andes. Warm water for washing waits at camp, and on clear nights the Milky Way is reflected on the lake.

Day 3Carhuacocha Camp (4,140 m) – Siula Pass (4,800 m) – Huayhuash Camp (4,300 m)

For many hikers, this is the best day of the circuit. We start early to catch sunrise, when the snow peaks are mirrored on Carhuacocha. The trail climbs to the Three Lakes viewpoint, above the turquoise waters of Siula, Quesillococha and Azulcocha, and on to Siula Pass, with views of the Raura range.

Lunch is set up five minutes below the pass. We then descend past Carnicero Lake to Huayhuash Camp, where the afternoon is free to rest and photograph Trapecio, the Jurao group and Carnicero.

Day 4Huayhuash Camp (4,300 m) – Trapecio Pass (5,000 m) – Elephant Valley Camp (3,900 m)

After coca tea and breakfast we head south up a wide valley toward Trapecio Pass. After about 4 hours we reach the top, with close views of Trapecio peak, the lakes below Puscanturpa, the Cuyoc and Milpo peaks and part of the Raura range.

We descend along the shores of the lakes, where we stop for lunch, and continue down to Elephant Valley. The camp is named after a giant boulder shaped like an elephant; another rock nearby looks like a mummy.

Day 5Elephant Valley Camp (3,900 m) – Santa Rosa Pass (5,100 m) – Cutatambo Camp (4,250 m)

Today we cross Santa Rosa Pass, the highest pass of the trek and a viewpoint over the whole range. From the top you see Jurao Lake and peak, Sarapo, Siula Grande, Siula Chico, Yerupajá and Rasac at their best.

We have lunch near Jurao Lake, then descend toward the Huayllapa valley and set up camp at Cutatambo.

Day 6Cutatambo Camp (4,250 m) – Cerro Gran Vista Viewpoint (5,152 m) – Cutatambo Camp (4,250 m)

Today we walk into mountaineering history. We hike up the remote Sarapococha valley, past Siula Base Camp, to the Gran Vista viewpoint (5,152 m), the highest point of the trek. In front of you rises the west face of Siula Grande (6,344 m), where Joe Simpson and Simon Yates lived the 1985 survival story told in the book and film Touching the Void.

From the ridge to the top of Gran Vista you stand in the middle of an amphitheater of glaciers and turquoise lakes, including Sarapococha, framed by Yerupajá, Sarapo and Carnicero. We return by the same route to Cutatambo.

Day 7Cutatambo Camp (4,250 m) – Huayllapa Village (3,500 m)

A short, downhill day through the Huayllapa canyon, following the Calinca River among tarwi (Andean lupin) plants, stone gates and waterfalls.

We camp in the village of Huayllapa, where you can buy toiletries, basic medicine, drinks and batteries, and find wifi, hot showers and outlets to charge your devices.

Day 8Huayllapa Village (3,500 m) – Tapush Pass (4,750 m) – Gashpapampa Camp (4,600 m)

The longest climb of the trek: about 5 hours uphill from Huayllapa on a well-marked, green trail to Tapush Pass. We have lunch at the pass, facing Diablo Mudo (5,350 m) and Susococha Lake.

A short descent takes us to Gashpapampa, at 4,600 m the highest camp of the circuit.

Day 9Gashpapampa Camp (4,600 m) – Yaucha Pass (4,850 m) – Jahuacocha Camp (4,050 m)

A day of panoramas over the entire range. From Yaucha Pass we follow a ridge above the Huacrish canyon, facing Yerupajá (Peru’s second-highest peak), Jirishanca, Rondoy, Siula, Tsacra and Rasac.

At the Huacrish viewpoint the whole range opens up above the turquoise lakes Jahuacocha and Solterococha. From there we descend to our last camp, on the shore of Jahuacocha.

Day 10Jahuacocha Camp (4,050 m) – Mancan Punta Pass (4,550 m) – Pocpa Village (3,460 m) – Huaraz (3,100 m)

We climb to Mancan Punta Pass for a last look at the northern Huayhuash, then descend to the village of Pocpa, where our transport waits. The trek ends with a farewell pachamanca, a traditional Andean meal cooked underground with hot stones, and the drive back to Huaraz.

Physical Training

Participants must be in good physical condition to join this trek. Andean Raju Expeditions recommends previous and constant preparation as a crucial factor to take on this challenge, then, the physical stress caused by the trekking days will be minimized.

We strongly advise all participants to have an adequate outdoor training plan and short hikes with gradual demands.

If you would like our advice, we can provide you a training plan after evaluation of your experience in hiking and sporting activity.

Acclimatization

Participants should have experience in altitude the last 2 to 3 days prior to the start of this trek, which ensures adequate acclimatization and conditioning of the body to the altitude. It is recommended to stay above 3,000 meters above sea level.

We suggest acclimatizing in Wilcacocha or Churup lakes before starting the trek.
